Abstract
This study examines wealth distribution in Montevideo between 1760 and 1860. Based on a dataset of probate inventories, we analyze the level, composition, and distribution of wealth in three distinct periods: the late colonial era (1760–1810), the era of revolutionary and independence wars (1810–1830), and the early republican era (1830–1860). We show how a frontier-economy model of inequality from colonial times evolved into an emerging capitalist model of higher inequality in 1860, with a transitional egalitarian phase in between during the revolutionary and independence wars.
